Clashes in southern Kyrgyzstan have killed one person and injured at least 37 others, as supporters of the interim government fought factions loyal to ousted president Kurmanbek Bakiyev.
Officials and witnesses said interim government forces regained control of the administration headquarters in the southern cities of Osh and Jalalabad Friday, a day after pro-Bakiyev demonstrators seized the buildings.
The worst fighting was in Jalalabad, where opponents exchanged gunfire, hurled stones and fought with sticks.
Medical authorities say some people were hospitalized with gunshot wounds, while others had trauma resulting from stones and other heavy objects.
In Osh, interim government supporters managed to eject Mr. Bakiyev's supporters from government offices. There were no serious injuries reported.
The United States Embassy in Kyrgyzstan issued a statement on its website expressing concern over the "politically-motivated" violence in the south, and urged a peaceful resolution to the situation.
